Often the choice of a car in our country is carried out according to the principle: “The larger the car, the more comfortable, more powerful, faster and safer it is.” However, world statistics suggests the opposite - compact urban cars are becoming increasingly popular, and they are able to move actively even in crowded megalopolises. So are practical Europeans and luxury-loving Americans really ready to give up their beliefs for the sake of fashion and environmental protection? To find out, we consider two cars from the model range of KIA - Rio and Cerato. After conducting their test, we find out what kind of car is really the best choice for a modern large city - Kia Rio or Kia Cerate.

Externally, the cars are quite similar - so many car dealerships specifically place KIA Rio and the larger KIA Cerato nearby, so as not to arouse in customers thoughts about the possibility of saving when buying a cheap model. However, Cerato has already gone through another update, which has made it a lot of differences from the Russian Rio assembly. In particular, the latter has elongated headlamps of considerable width, which are slightly inclined towards the center, as well as a narrow grille, forming a bizarre "smile" characteristic of the entire KIA model range of the early 10s of this century. The roofline looks much more harmonious than the younger model in the production range of KIABut behind the serious differences are not observed. Similar wide lanterns, a high trunk lid and a sloping silhouette, which allows to speak about a well-developed aerodynamics of the body.

Despite the fact that the interior design of the Kia Rio or KIA Cerate has many fundamental differences, after a brief introduction it is almost impossible to distinguish cars from photographs - there are so many common features here. In KIA Rio closely enough - there is practically no gap between the front seats, so if a person of large build will sit to the right of the driver, they will constantly collide with their elbows. The Rio dashboard has a two-tier layout - the upper tier is distinguished by the use of a very soft and pleasant to the touch polymer material. The center console is installed almost vertically and is focused on the center - there is no turning towards the driver, as on many modern vehicles. KIA Rio devices are located in three deep wells and look presentable thanks to the use of a bright, but not blinding, backlight.

That's just the salon of such a KIA called more fashionable and modern does not work - the front panel has only a small stamping, which is quite far from two tiers on Rio. The center console is slightly deployed to the driver, but it looks quite boring due to the very close location of the multimedia blocks and the climate system. There is nothing to complain about - it is the devices that have two large beautiful scales, as well as a full-fledged on-board computer monitor with white backlight, which does not irritate the eyes.

KIA Rio was no exception - the car is shaking the passengers sufficiently when driving large irregularities, and also causes noticeable fluctuations when passing long waves on the asphalt. Of course, Rio is perfectly controlled and has very sharp reactions to the steering, but you have to pay for it not only with blows, but also with strong squeaks coming from under the rear of the body.

Despite the larger size and use of a multi-link rear suspension, KIA Cerato is not too different in character. The car is also tough passes minor irregularities, and also perfectly listens to the driver. However, there are no problems with a shortage of torque - even if mistakes are made in choosing the right gear, it is very difficult to drown out the Rio motor.

In addition, KIA engineers have tried to work with a 6-speed transmission, which allows you to confidently stay in fast city traffic due to the possibility of the optimal choice of gear ratio for each driving mode. But one still doesn’t have to wait for miracles from the engine of such a small volume - the car reluctantly accelerates after 80–90 km / h.
Is it worth overpaying?
When comparing the Rio or Cerato it is clearly noticeable that the latter provides a much greater comfort - relating both to the interior and to the chassis. However, KIA Rio looks very decent even against the background of the “big brother” in the model range of the company. So if you do not plan to transport three large passengers in the back and are ready to put up with excessive suspension stiffness, you will be able to save a lot by choosing a car of compact dimensions that requires less fuel.
