When the timing belt breaks, big problems arise, from replacing a few bent valves to overhauling the engine block. It is the likelihood of such problems and they wanted to exclude as much as possible the developers of the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant, while modernizing the UAZ Patriot. They added a special belt tensioner to the timing belt design, which excludes, as the developers claim, the occurrence of a rupture defect.

ZMZ specialists have developed a new belt tensioner pulley, changes in its design allow it to have an increased level of protection from dirt and dust, which is one of the reasons common timing belt break. The durability of the roller also increased significantly after the upgrade. Although in itself the change in the design of the tensioning roller may seem unworthy of the loud name “modernization”, however, taking into account possible the effects of a broken timing belt, the illusion of insignificance disappears. Because of this "minor" improvement, the reliability and quality of the engine as a whole is greatly improved. It is with such engines that all manufactured Patriots are equipped today. ZMZ today switched to the production of only engines with improved timing belt tensioner pulley. Only they are now supplied to the assembly shops of the UAZ.

In order to put the production of upgraded engines on stream, the designers had to make changes to the entire process. Changes were made and the technology of processing brackets. Despite claims that new timing belt tensioner significantly increased the period of its use, no evidence of this, based on facts, the developers ZMZ not lead. Certainly, some kind of strength tests were carried out, in which the upgraded engine showed its advantage over the previous engine. Therefore, we have to believe what is being said on the word. This innovation seems to have no effect on the price tag of the finished car, unless, of course, a new video is turned out of a single piece of gold.
