At the Zavolzhsky Engine Plant (ZMZ) today, work is underway to create a new handout for UAZ cars and a new engine that will have turbocharging. The first car on which all this will be installed, will be the "messiah" of the domestic off-road car industry, the future compact crossover with the conditional name UAZ 3170. New turbocharged engines developed on the basis of the famous motor SMZ-406. One of the modifications of such an engine will have a system for changing gas distribution phases. The power that this engine will reach will be 170 horsepower with a peak torque of 350 Nm. The second modification of the new engine will give out half a horse and a peak moment of 330 Nm. Compared to the current 136-horsepower gasoline engine, which is registered under the hood of the UAZ Patriot (ZMZ-40906), which has almost three-liter volume and 217 Nm, and with a 113-horsepower diesel ZMZ-51432 (270 Nm), this is a significant technological breakthrough. Although there is still plowing and plowing up to the power of automobile engines of other brands that reign in the segment (“Japanese” and “Koreans”).

It is also not the first year that domestic developers are working on changing the transfer case. The old is outdated and morally and physically, customers are unhappy. Only one plus is a low price in a crisis time, but this advantage is dubious, and it is not for long.

UAZ is carefully studying similar technical solutions of competitors in order to use them painlessly for the pocket. These are Oerlikon (Switzerland), Mecaprom (Italy), Divgi Warner (India), Chinese BAIC and, of course, native KAMAZ. But it all comes down to costs, for example, Divgi Warner solutions, which could only be localized by a maximum of fifteen percent, would significantly increase the cost UAZ Patriot, and the same picture for the other possible options. It is not easy to make a choice, especially in a crisis. Therefore, it is better to develop something of their own. But this too requires both “brains” and substantial finances.

By the way, when the box is still ready, it will move to all the cars produced by UAZ. In the new razdatka, on which ZMZ’s development work, we cannot do without a significant modernization of some parts, for example, the gears of the intermediate shaft. Other parts will generally be completely replaced: we are talking about the intermediate shaft itself, the front-wheel drive shaft, the gearbox cover, etc. In addition, new bearings will be used, since the engine will be more powerful and the old bearings will most likely simply not withstand the loads.

Today it’s premature to talk about something specific new motor and handouts. The UAZ leadership requested assistance from the government. It asks one billion one hundred million to upgrade the engine and half a billion to the transfer case.
